Born in Glengoura, County Cork, Jonathan began his professional journey early, riding his first winner, Trendy Gift, at just 16. That victory came in a mares’ bumper at Cork on April 9, 2012, on a horse trained by his father, Liam Burke. He turned professional in May 2014 and immediately made an impression by winning the Connacht National at Roscommon on Golden Kite.

Jonathan quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the retained jockey for the late Alan Potts. During that period, he secured high-profile wins, including the Champion Chase at Gowran Park aboard Sizing Europe and the Maghull Novices’ Chase at Aintree on Sizing Granite. In recognition of his rising talent and hard work, he was honoured with the Outstanding Achievement Award from Horse Racing Ireland in 2015.

After recovering from injury setbacks in 2016, Jonathan moved into the UK racing circuit, working with respected trainers such as Charlie Longsdon and Tom George. In 2024, he joined the Fergal O’Brien stable, where he has continued to excel — including consecutive Long Walk Hurdle victories at Ascot on Crambo in 2023 and 2024.
